Strange problem with Exchange System Manager

After renaming my Active Directory domain I had a couple of problems with Exchange 2003 System Manager (ESM). I disabled forms based authentication so I could fix another problem I had with Exchange Activsync not working (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817379) but when I tried to enable it again I got:

Exchange System Manager
Access is denied
Facility: Win32
ID no: c0070005
Exchange System Manager

Very similar to http://www.freelists.org/post/exchangelist/Exchange-2k3-Post-Domain-Rename

After much swearing and faffing about with ADSI edit, searching in the registry and running Filemon/Regmon to try to determine the problem, I simply installed the Exchange Management tools on a spare XP Pro PC, logged on as the domain administrator and was then able to re-enable forms based authentication. Hurrah!

Hopefully this will help someone out.

Why do I have to share the roads with idiots?

On my way back home from Norfolk today I encountered an impressive number of imbeciles.

One I left behind on every fun bit of road with a national limit, then he’d be right up behind me when I slowed down to the speed limit through a village. Eventually he overtook me in a 40 zone. If he was in so much of a hurry why not keep up in the national limit? The most likely answer? He’s a crap driver.

Then a moron in a Range Rover (not that there’s anything wrong with them; I quite fancy one for my next car) overtook me just before a 30 limit turned into a national and then proceeded to hold me up for the next 5 miles before we got to some dual cabbageway and I passed him. So another one not in a hurry but wanting to do pointless overtakes.

Imbeciles!

Trappistes Rochefort

I had dinner in The Chequers at Binham in Norfolk on Friday night and they have a superb selection of mostly Belgian beers.

The one I went for is called Trappistes Rochfort and is delicious. It’s also 9.2 percent alcohol so it needs to be treated with respect.

Accompanying this I had a large plate of deep fried whitebait, served very simply with brown bread and butter, a side salad and a wedge of lemon. Eating whole fish is a little bit strange but they are tasty little things and well worth trying.

Sidepocket for a toad

I just had to try this one. “Sidepocket for a toad”. What? I have no idea what the name means but it’s a light hoppy ale with a slightly floral smell to it.

Lindemans Kriek – Belgian cherry beer

I usually go for the Bacchus stuff in Sainsburys but found this in Asda (yes, we’re on a budget) at the weekend and gave it a try. It initially tastes a little like cider and then as the flavour develops in your mouth the cherry flavour comes through. Delicious.

Stinger ale

I discovered this a while ago in Threshers/Wine Rack and, like the label says, it does actually make your mouth tingle. Very pleasant and worth a try if you can find it.

Signs on the tube

I’ve always wanted to do this. http://blog.tomsteel.co.uk/2009/10/01/guerilla-signs-on-the-tube/

Britain’s top police tortoise

Written by two very good friends of mine, the latest Mitchell and Webb episode includes a very funny sketch about Britain’s top police tortoise.

I would highly recomment a listen with the BBC iPlayer. You could even use your iPod Touch or iPhone.

Another reason to get an iPhone or iPod Touch

After owning an iPod Touch for a month, I have just discovered that I can watch the episode of Gardener’s World I missed because the Sky Plus box decided that there was a power cut (I have a UPS which emails me when someone so much as farts at the local power station so I think I’d know).

If you didn’t know that either then you’ll be pleased to hear you can catch up on your missed programmes at http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer. You can even watch the sort of trash that my lovely wife watches (Eastenders).

SQL Server 2005 Service pack strangeness

I think I may have discovered a new “undocumented feature” in SQL server 2005.

I had WSUS installed using the Windows Internal database component and working nicely. I then installed SQL Server 2005, patched to SP3 to run Microsoft Dynamics CRM and discovered that it broke the WSUS installation.

“No problem”, I thought, I’ll just install another SQL server instance to run WSUS on. This installed fine until WSUS complained that the SQL server version must be at least SP1. Ok, that’s fine, I’ll just run the service pack again to update the second instance.

This failed, complaining that “The SQL Server VSS Writer service failed to start due to the following error:
This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.”

A fair amount of Googling failed to turn up anything useful (this exact error message does not appear to exist) but in the end I stumbled on a discussion about an MSI for the SQL Server VSS writer itself. Installed that from the setup folder in the extracted service pack, et voila!
